Show Notes

In episode 71 of Twitty in the City, Twitty and THC get nostalgic over the golden days of fast food dining, and how far it has fallen since. They get into everything from the death of the dollar menu and why drive-thrus feel slower now, to smaller burgers, disappearing play areas, and the fast food spots that get it right.

Whether you miss Taco Bell’s old menu, McDonald’s dollar drinks, or the days when fast food actually felt fast, this episode gets to the heart of how fast food quality, convenience, and affordability have changed over time.

[00:00:02] Speaker A: 20 in the city. Aloha, fast food. [00:00:06] Speaker B: Okay. [00:00:07] Speaker A: It ain't how it used to be. [00:00:08] Speaker B: Oh, 100%. [00:00:09] Speaker A: It hit different back then. [00:00:10] Speaker B: 100%. [00:00:11] Speaker A: And I'm talking, we gonna cover it all. [00:00:13] Speaker B: Okay. [00:00:14] Speaker A: It's just all different for me. I'm gonna hit the, the service aspect of it. [00:00:21] Speaker B: The service. [00:00:22] Speaker A: Oh yes. Oh yes. [00:00:23] Speaker B: Okay. [00:00:24] Speaker A: Back then the drive through was supposed to be faster than going in than going in. The drive through was get in and get out. [00:00:34] Speaker B: Okay. [00:00:35] Speaker A: Nowadays I debate if it's worth going inside faster than the drive through. [00:00:39] Speaker B: No. [00:00:42] Speaker A: Like I don't know what happened, but I remember being in the drive through line. It could be 50. Perfect example. I'm a die hard Taco Bell fan. I remember in high school after football practice, Taco Bell drive through line could be 10 deep. There could be four people inside. Oh yeah. And I still get in that line because I knew it was going to rip. [00:01:01] Speaker B: And you know what? It's not about Taco Bell. And I'm going to tell you what it is. It's the people that don't understand that they order the Same Taco Bell, McDonald's, whatever. Before you pull up to that window, you know, you know what you already wanted, but now all of a sudden you got amnesia and you stare at that menu. [00:01:20] Speaker A: Oh, so. So you don't think it's the fast food people. You think it's the people. [00:01:24] Speaker B: I think the fast food people are doing what they're doing, but they're just in the back and they can hear this person on the, on the thing just sitting there. [00:01:32] Speaker A: I'll give you credit to that. I also was, I used to work [00:01:35] Speaker B: a drive thru at McDonald's. [00:01:36] Speaker A: Oh, I never work fast food. I work fast. I was too, too much of a fat kid and I was like, I don't want to get burnt out on the fast food. [00:01:42] Speaker B: Oh, you do get burnt out. [00:01:44] Speaker A: I know. That's why I never wanted to be in it. [00:01:45] Speaker B: But you also come up with new stuff too. [00:01:47] Speaker A: I feel like also though, some people are stuck in that draft through line because these fast food spots give you so many options to like remove stuff. I don't recall growing up where it was like, let me get this and take this off and substitute that. If you want the number one, you get the number one. You might be able to upgrade to a large, but you ain't taking out the fry to get a nugget or substitute in the sandwich for without the bun or the lettuce wrap. It's like you also. They've Given too many people options where they are sitting there stuck. [00:02:22] Speaker B: But I'm just. I. I would give that to you, but there are fast food restaurants out there. Like, let's take in and out. [00:02:29] Speaker A: Okay. [00:02:29] Speaker B: Or maybe even Chick Fil A. Yep. You not slowing these folks down. I don't care what you got to take off, what you got to put on, what you got to do with these. These are professional. [00:02:38] Speaker A: That is true. [00:02:39] Speaker B: Professional order takers. [00:02:40] Speaker A: Those two are clean. [00:02:41] Speaker B: And they will sit there and not even have to blink and just be touching that tablet. They wouldn't blink at all. Boom. And then you think, and you look at them because most people that walk up, they know exactly how they want the burger, what they want to burger or whatever. [00:02:52] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:02:53] Speaker B: So they wall up there like, look, I just want this. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And then they come and they just. And then they'll ask them what was that again? And they'll read it back. Exact. [00:03:01] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:03:01] Speaker B: I even stopped questioning those folks. If I'm going through Chick Fil A, I'm not questioning. [00:03:05] Speaker A: Oh, I have. [00:03:06] Speaker B: I know, I know what I said. They. They heard what I said and it's [00:03:10] Speaker A: always corrected Chick Fil A. [00:03:11] Speaker B: Same as in and out, in and out. [00:03:12] Speaker A: I would say those are the top two places that I don't. I. I don't question moving. [00:03:18] Speaker B: The line looks long, but the way they move it and they. And they'll even tell you you are behind this car. Yes. It ain't like Dutch brothers where somebody is trying to cut you off cuz they like, oh, well, he didn't get his order in quick enough. No, it's not that. [00:03:30] Speaker A: Yeah, no, those two, I will say they, they have survived the test of time. [00:03:35] Speaker B: Got you. [00:03:36] Speaker A: I also feel like fast food has changed and I get it. It's now 2026. But what happened to a true value menu a dollar less? Yeah. True value. I ain't talking this biggie bag bundle. That's not a value meal. I'm talking about that value meal where if you rolled up with five, six dollars, you were set. [00:04:02] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:04:03] Speaker A: 99 cent everything. Yeah, 99 cent everything. Small this, medium that. [00:04:07] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. [00:04:08] Speaker A: You would be able to hit the volume menu and make your own combo. [00:04:12] Speaker B: Ch. Right now there's a 4.99 meal. That's. I forget which one who has it. But somebody has a 4.99 meal right now. [00:04:19] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:04:19] Speaker B: And that's. That's like enticing. Enticing. Right. [00:04:22] Speaker A: And it's only probably like three items. Two. Like two Things and a drink and maybe like an apple pie and a small drink. [00:04:28] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:04:28] Speaker A: Or a small drink. Yeah. Whereas the value menu, Mickey D's large sweet tea, 99 cent. That thing. I used to tear that up with a cheeseburger. That was also 99 cent. And, and a medium. [00:04:41] Speaker B: I think, I think that's where McDonald's messed up. I think they missed up on this, on this, on this thing. Because think about it, I didn't mind paying a full price for a Big Mac knowing I can get a large soda for a buck. [00:04:50] Speaker A: That's true. [00:04:51] Speaker B: If I knew, if I knew that I could get a large, a big soda and their sodas were big. If I can get that for a [00:04:56] Speaker A: dollar, it was a compensation. [00:04:58] Speaker B: I, I, I'm getting a 20 piece. It's happening. [00:05:01] Speaker A: That is true. You, you knew that it was that compensation. Oh yeah, I'm gonna pay for that. [00:05:06] Speaker B: Once they took it away, that's when everything started. Think about it. The minute they took away the dollar drink, that's when everything started sounding expensive. [00:05:14] Speaker A: Yeah, it did. [00:05:15] Speaker B: The minute the dollar drink disappeared, that's when everything was like, man, why is McDonald's so expensive? It did bring back the dollar drink any size in. Bring that back. And watch out, people. Stop complaining. [00:05:24] Speaker A: Bring the dollar. [00:05:24] Speaker B: You're welcome. [00:05:25] Speaker A: McDonald's Taco Bell. I just seen your dog on advertisement. Miss me with this little bougie ass value meal. Bring me back the night. Bring me back where I could have got my, what was that called? The taco pizza for 99 cents, brah. Bring it back. Bring me my, my decent sized nacho supreme. They didn't have all the toppings, but had my main, my beef, my cheese, my tomatoes. 99 cent. [00:05:49] Speaker B: I'm, I'm gonna tell you, I'm gonna tell you why I think that the, [00:05:51] Speaker A: the Mexican pizza at Taco Bell is called the Mexican. [00:05:55] Speaker B: Mexican pizza at Taco Bell. You know how good you, I, you know why I think that works for my generation and I'm gonna tell you why. And I found this out back in the 80s, I used to get a taco and I'm talking about the original Taco Bell. Still had the bell on the top of the little. [00:06:09] Speaker A: It had a Chihuahua. [00:06:10] Speaker B: It was like yellow. It didn't even have the Chihuahua yet. Chihuahua wasn't even there. [00:06:13] Speaker A: Oh, before the Chihuahua. [00:06:14] Speaker B: Yes. This was like the brown and yellow taco bells. [00:06:18] Speaker A: Oh, gosh. [00:06:19] Speaker B: That had, it had an actual bell on the top. [00:06:21] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:06:21] Speaker B: Of the thing. [00:06:22] Speaker A: Yep. The taco looked a little sketchy. [00:06:23] Speaker B: They had a Taco, and it was called a taco light. And some people don't remember this taco. I don't remember. It was made out of a flour tortilla that was. That was fried. So what I think is. Is in my days, that's all I used to Mama be like, what do you want? I want a taco light. I want to taco light. Because it was a different shell, okay? And I. And I think that's the same way they make the Mexican pizzas. [00:06:44] Speaker A: And that's that same shell. [00:06:45] Speaker B: Same shell. They used to make a taco shell out of that Mexican pizza shell because [00:06:50] Speaker A: it is a different shell. It's not like any other flower. [00:06:52] Speaker B: It's not corn. [00:06:53] Speaker A: Yeah. Oh, it is. Yes, it is. [00:06:56] Speaker B: So they used to make a taco out of that, and they called it a taco light. And I used to get that every time with sour cream. [00:07:02] Speaker A: Bring that back, by the way. [00:07:03] Speaker B: Oh, you bring that back, and you're gonna see. [00:07:05] Speaker A: You're gonna see all the Gen X [00:07:07] Speaker B: if you bring back the taco light. You're gonna see the price, and you're gonna see the sales in Mexican pizzas dropping. People gonna be like, I don't need [00:07:14] Speaker A: my Mexican pizza now, by the way, if you know what THC is talking about, because I don't get in the comments. [00:07:19] Speaker B: Oh, man. [00:07:20] Speaker A: What a taco. What a taco. [00:07:22] Speaker B: Do you remember a taco light? It was big in the Bay Area, the Taco Bells had. It was called because people thought it [00:07:28] Speaker A: was like a taco light. [00:07:29] Speaker B: Like, it was lighter. That it wasn't. [00:07:31] Speaker A: It was like. [00:07:32] Speaker B: Like it was during. It was during the 80s. It was like 88, 89. [00:07:36] Speaker A: I don't remember 2000, so. [00:07:39] Speaker B: Oh, my God. [00:07:39] Speaker A: He was in the. He was in the Bay, though. That's crazy. All right. Taco light. [00:07:44] Speaker B: I barely remember the. Okay, yeah. I'm telling you, people. People that are my age are sitting [00:07:48] Speaker A: there going, brah the tacos. [00:07:50] Speaker B: That's why we like Mexican pizzas. Because Mexican pizzas are made with that same. That same. That's why we always, like, ask any generation next, you want a Mexican pizza? They'd be like, hell, yes, I will eat a Mexican pizza anytime. Don't lie. Don't. Don't lie. There ain't one person that's Gen X out there that's like, I'd never eat a Mexican pizza. Shut the hell up. Shut the hell up. [00:08:12] Speaker A: He calling all out, all of y'. [00:08:13] Speaker B: All. [00:08:14] Speaker A: There's. [00:08:14] Speaker B: You know it. [00:08:15] Speaker A: You know what? There'll be somebody in the comments that'll probably say, I haven't, but they'll do the wink emoji just to say they did it. Oh, yeah, that is true. That is a food. Also, prices in general are just getting ridiculous. And I also feel like fast food is slipping on quality also. [00:08:32] Speaker B: Oh, 100%. [00:08:34] Speaker A: Like, 100%. Granted, it never used to look like the commercial. It never did. [00:08:38] Speaker B: Nope. [00:08:39] Speaker A: But at least the size matched. You know, the Big Mac, sure, it didn't look all perfect, but I at least knew it felt like the Big Mac. Whereas now sometimes I get a Big Mac, I get a Junior Whopper, a double Whopper. It's like I lost my squeezing ability. [00:08:53] Speaker B: Right. And you know what it is? It's like they don't think we notice. And I'm gonna tell you something. I'm a former big boy. I used to be 343 pounds. [00:09:00] Speaker A: Yeah, you was big. [00:09:00] Speaker B: I was a big. I'm a former big boy. [00:09:02] Speaker A: I'm also big. [00:09:03] Speaker B: So I'm just saying. I'm just saying, like, y' all just. [00:09:06] Speaker A: You can't hear me out. [00:09:07] Speaker B: You can't get food past me. I got food. I got food philosophies. And I'm gonna say. And I'm. And I've been noticing when I get burgers, and I'm gonna leave the name out of it, but I've been getting. Just say cheeseburgers. Let me get a cheeseburger. Now. When I get cheeseburgers, I get them plain. Don't hate on me. I just like plain cheeseburgers. When I open them, I'm noticing that the patty doesn't go out as far on the. As it used. [00:09:30] Speaker A: Oh, they. [00:09:31] Speaker B: There's a lot more bun showing on the edge. I'm noticing this. You know who you are. I have to tell you who. [00:09:36] Speaker A: You got to tell me. [00:09:37] Speaker B: I don't got to tell you. [00:09:38] Speaker A: There's another. [00:09:39] Speaker B: There's another company out there that takes French fries and cuts them in half long way. [00:09:43] Speaker A: Oh, see, that's petty. [00:09:45] Speaker B: That's. Oh, I got to eat five of these things to get one fry. [00:09:49] Speaker A: That's foul. I have noticed. You know who you are to. My patties are getting smaller. Yes, they are. And that's. That's hurting me. You're shortening my size but raising my price. [00:09:58] Speaker B: Yeah. What I thought was. Is I thought the chicken patties were getting fatter, but I was like, nah, my beef patties are getting thinner. That's what it is. I thought chicken patties was getting like. I was like, they using the whole five for this patties. [00:10:10] Speaker A: That's not changing. [00:10:11] Speaker B: No, that's not changing. [00:10:12] Speaker A: It's your, it's your meat that's changing. [00:10:14] Speaker B: I'm. I'm losing meat in my burgers. And I'm like, this isn't because, like, I'll give my dog a plain burger every now and then. Well, he can just have the patty. Even. He's looking at me like, wait a minute, why did I finish? Why'd I finish that in one bite? Right? Like that should, that should have took me at least. [00:10:27] Speaker A: But yeah, I. Fast food is hurting me, dog. It's. It's frustrating because I, I know they can get back to the way I know they can. [00:10:37] Speaker B: The customer service ain't gonna come back the way. It's not gonna come back the same way. And, and, and, and that's why we're seeing. But that's why we're seeing most of these fast food restaurants pushing towards AI. Pushing towards you walking in and talking to a monitor, rather talking to a person now. Now have you walk up and just type the screen. So they're not even looking for people to be interactive with anybody anymore. [00:10:57] Speaker A: Still ain't even as fast. The kiosk is still. [00:11:00] Speaker B: Back in the 80s, we used to pull up the places where people brought your stuff out on roller skates. [00:11:05] Speaker A: Oh, Sonic. I. Sonic was. [00:11:07] Speaker B: Ours was A and W root beer. Oh, it was the old school. A and W root beer. [00:11:12] Speaker A: Also. What happened to a W? Not to get off track? That was kfc. They need to unmerge. Yeah. A and W was my spot. [00:11:21] Speaker B: I'm gonna tell you right now, I miss a Long John Silver. Long John Silver was another one. [00:11:25] Speaker A: That's what Long John Silver did for me. [00:11:27] Speaker B: Like, you feel like when you spent 4.99 and you spent 4.99 at Long John Silver, you was like, okay, this is a meal. [00:11:33] Speaker A: Well, it's because too, you know why? So Long John Silver's. I always felt like you got the quantity. Yes. But it was also because it was in the doggone to go Styrofoam and those three sections would overflow. And I felt like I got a deal when my Mac salad is slightly running over to my fries and my fries is slightly running over my two fish patties and my three hush puppies are like the size of a tennis ball. Yes. Oh. Oh, that was a win. [00:12:02] Speaker B: There's a place in Vallejo where I'm from at Vallejo, California, there's a place called Bud's Burgers, and their fries come In a cup and a Styrofoam cup, Not a paper cup with a picture of French fries on the side of it. You know what cup I'm talking about? It comes in a Styrofoam. And I'm like, they've always come in a Styrofoam cup. That's been the best fries that anybody's ever made. But I honestly, I think there's a. Like when you said Styrofoam. Like, I remember when our individual sandwiches came in their individual Styrofoam containers. The Big Mac had its own Styrofoam container. Everything had a Styrofoam container. We had Styrofoam floating everywhere. Everywhere. In the 80s, anything. Everything came in Styrofoam. [00:12:40] Speaker A: You got. So if you got fries, a burger, nuggets. [00:12:46] Speaker B: In fact, the Styrofoam was yellow, and it said. And it said nuggets in, like, a. Like a. Like a stamp on top of this yellow Styrofoam that held the nuggets. Oh, yeah. For real? For real. And then like. Like, I'm gonna tell you some of these. These. These. There was one burger that McDonald's made that I wish they would bring back. [00:13:01] Speaker A: Bring it back. [00:13:02] Speaker B: It was a Styrofoam one that had cold on one side and hot on the other. It was called a McDot, and it came out in the 90s. It had your lettuce, tomato, and. And. And your bun on one side and your mayo on one side. And then it had another bun with the hamburger and the cheese. [00:13:17] Speaker A: And that's hot. [00:13:18] Speaker B: That was hot. And then the Styrofoam was able to. Where you took the lid off, you could fold it in half and then make the sandwich. And then you had this sandwich. Now, was it just a regular old burger that they made? [00:13:27] Speaker A: Probably, but it was set. It kept cold. [00:13:31] Speaker B: Yeah, it was the way you presented it. I like it in a way. Yeah. That's one thing I think. I don't know about customer service, but I think presentation. Oh, presentation can improve. [00:13:39] Speaker A: Presentation can improve. [00:13:41] Speaker B: Now it's just like this. A burger. [00:13:42] Speaker A: Eat it. It's sloppy looking. [00:13:44] Speaker B: Sloppy. [00:13:45] Speaker A: I also miss. I'm not old enough to do this anymore, but I also miss who still is rocking the playhouses like Mc McDonald's, Burger King, where I grew up, Wendy's. They all had the playside area outside. Outside. Yeah. [00:14:02] Speaker B: If it rained, you just. [00:14:03] Speaker A: Oh, you still was outside. McDonald's was the first where I. We had one in Virginia. [00:14:08] Speaker B: You was playing on this Equipment in the rain, bro. How that look? How many times did you eat it? [00:14:12] Speaker A: Oh, so many. It didn't take long. Mom would say, nah, don't go out. I want to go out there. [00:14:16] Speaker B: Back then, that was unforgiving. [00:14:18] Speaker A: Oh, that was. [00:14:21] Speaker B: It barely had bark. [00:14:22] Speaker A: That's why. That's why I only took one time. [00:14:24] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. [00:14:24] Speaker A: And you had to go back inside. Oh, Yeah. I thought McDonald's was bougie when they had an indoor one. And I was like, oh, look at y'. [00:14:30] Speaker B: All. [00:14:30] Speaker A: I like this. I feel fancy. But they had the little shoe holes and everything. [00:14:34] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. Little cubbies. [00:14:35] Speaker A: Yeah, little cubbies. [00:14:36] Speaker B: Little cubbies. Burger King. Burger King did. Looked at McDonald's when they pulled it in, and Burger King said, yeah, we'll come in and we'll go up. Yeah, Like, Burger King was the first one I seen. They had, like, a three story place. [00:14:46] Speaker A: Yeah. It was above the building. Oh, yeah. [00:14:48] Speaker B: Like the. Like one of the pipes where the. Where they cooking where the thing was like, right next to the playground. They, like, you couldn't touch it or nothing, but it was, like, right next to. [00:14:57] Speaker A: It was a little bit of a hazard. It was. [00:14:58] Speaker B: You was outside just climbing around, like, what the hell? [00:15:01] Speaker A: No, that's. Those are the days. I'm like, that's when restaurants used to do it big. [00:15:06] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:15:06] Speaker A: But now it's all this get in, get out. And also we're sloppy. Poppy. [00:15:11] Speaker B: Right. [00:15:11] Speaker A: Like, don't. Like, if you're gonna get rid of some stuff, the hamburger patty's gonna be smaller. Yeah. Get. Give me something. Like, just don't take it all from me. [00:15:19] Speaker B: And. And. And don't. And one thing I don't like is, like, you talked about prices, and when you said it, if I order two combos. [00:15:30] Speaker A: Two. [00:15:30] Speaker B: Just two. I don't super size. I don't large. I don't do nothing. I just do regular size. Hold on. And you look at me and you say, $30 and 26 cents. Like, it's just normal dog. I. I don't understand how you telling me that is like, this is really. This really makes sense. He should be paying $30 for two extra combo meals. [00:15:49] Speaker A: It don't make sense. And it's not even the only place that I used to. I haven't been there in a while. The only place I felt like that's fast food. That I should be spending $30 would be like, a KFC where I'm getting, like, the family pack. [00:16:05] Speaker B: Okay. [00:16:06] Speaker A: But even getting two of those back then would cost you 30. That is the only fast food spot. I feel like it's like, where'd you go? It's like, man, I drop $30. Where'd you go? KFC. Oh, but I got two. Two buckets and two things of Mac and some coleslaw and 14 biscuits. Okay. [00:16:22] Speaker B: Yeah. Because if you drop 30 today, you getting two buckets. [00:16:25] Speaker A: Maybe, maybe, maybe. [00:16:26] Speaker B: I think you ain't getting size. [00:16:28] Speaker A: I think you're either getting two buckets. [00:16:29] Speaker B: They might even look at you crazy for a biscuit. They might look at you like you and you want a what? That means butter to what you want. What not. [00:18:11] Speaker B: I'm hoping I got enough points on my Dutch brothers app. So I Could get me enough free coffee today. Look on there. [00:18:17] Speaker A: Nope.
